"Handle with Care" is the soundtrack to a site-specific audio/visual performance created by composer Alexa Dexa & visual artist Kevin McCoy for Detroit's Sidewalk Festival of Performing Arts (2013). The live performance took place in Art Alley, whose sights, sounds, and discarded objects heavily informed and influenced the piece.

Inspired by an Art Alley mural of a package sporting the same phrase, "Handle with Care" is built on the sonic foundation of on-site field recordings from the Art Alley's everyday aural landscape. These field recordings were manipulated and layered with MIDI melodies meant to evoke a sense of the surrounding neighborhood and its history.

The live performance included a choreographed mural painting by Kevin McCoy with a palette referencing the Art Alley murals as well as live, semi-improvised sound-making by Alexa Dexa with instruments including a found percussion “drum set” made on-site out of a discarded chair and a PVC pipe cap, a found umbrella noise-maker procured on-site, toy glockenspiel, kalimba, and infrequent vocals repeatedly singing “handle with care, handle with care for me, care for me”.

Alexa Dexa is a soulful girl with bells and bubbles. Her fanciful toychestral concoctions blend floating vocals, poignant lyrics, haunting melodies, and dance-worthy beats. (Not to mention a collection of toy instruments that would put many playpens to shame, the most favored of which is her Schoenhut toy piano.) ... more
